Pack 73 & Dogwood District Pinewood Derby Rules

1. A new car must be built yearly from the materials in the Official Pinewood Derby Racing
Car Kit, BSA Item # 17006. This kit includes a rectangular pinewood body with axle slots,
nails for axles, and wheels. Official BSA color wheels, BSA Item # 1755x, are allowed to be
substituted for the standard black wheels; including their accompanying axles. NO PRECUT
cars, even those marked “Official BSA,” shall be allowed during the District Pinewood Derby.

2. The length of the car shall not exceed 7”, the width shall not exceed 2 3/4”, and the
weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. The cut-outs provided for the axles in the block of wood
shall be used and unaltered.

3. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car.

4. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight limit by the addition
of wood or metal, however, any added weights should be built into and securely fastened to the
body of the car.

5. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings on the wheels are prohibited.

6. The car shall not ride on any type of springs or suspension system.

7. Details such as a steering wheel, driver, decals, and paint are permissible provided they
are securely fastened to the car.

8. The car must be freewheeling without any type of starting devices.

9. Axles (nails furnished with the kit) may be polished to remove burrs or imperfections and
may be lubricated with a dry based lubricant only.

10. The wheels may be sanded to remove burrs and imperfections from the surface which
is in contact with the track. The width and shape of the wheel shall not be altered in any way.
Only the wheels supplied in the official kit or the Official BSA color wheels, BSA Item #
1755x, including their accompanying axles, shall be used.

11. Three categories of judging (i.e., speed, beauty, and unique) will be conducted with
recognition given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each category. Each car may register and
compete in only one category in the District competition. All cars must be able to run the
length of the track and meet all other qualifications in order to compete in any category. There
is no height limit; however if the car does not clear the electronic scoring device, it will not be
allowed to compete for speed. It may still compete for beauty and uniqueness and be caught
before crossing under the scoring device.

12. Each car must be registered and inspected before it can compete. In the case of the
beauty and unique competition, after the car is registered, the car shall not be handled by
anyone until the judges have completed their inspection.

13. In the case of those cars competing in the speed competition, the car shall be handled
only by the scout owning the car and only at the time he is called to race his car, except where
the rules permit repairs. Except for repairs, the car cannot be altered in any way after it is
registered and inspected.

14. Should a car be damaged during the race, a repair time of two minutes is allowed, one
time.

15. The racing competition will be run using the "Perfect or Partial-Perfect Charts" to set-up
the speed elimination. Cars will be randomly assigned to lanes and given points to determine
overall status. The cars will run on 3 lanes of track. Basically it is a “points” race.
